hooks worth stealing this week

1) the “confession” hook

What it is: you open by admitting you canceled or quit something, which disarms the "this is an ad" guard and opens a loop.

I just canceled another $20 a month subscription because I realized I could do the same thing for free."

People hate wasting money more than they enjoy saving it.

So when he opens by saying he canceled something, it lands like a confession, not a pitch.

And the fact that it's $20 a month makes it read like a real receipt, not some round marketing number.

Then he slips in another, which quietly tells you he does this all the time... so you're nodding along before you even notice.

By the time he says he could do it all for free, you're stuck on one question:

HOW?

Steal it:

I just canceled my [$X a month tool] because I realized I could [do the same thing] for free.

→ test it today: open your next video by canceling a tool your audience quietly overpays for.

By the way… this guy is cooking.

I’ve shown at least 3 of his videos in my last emails, and he’s consistently pulling millions of views with AI-generated videos.

2) the “counterintuitive list” hook

What it is: a numbered list built on the category everyone underrates.

"Here are three boring businesses that'll make you a millionaire, and how much each makes per year."

"Boring" and "millionaire" don't belong in the same sentence.

Putting them side by side forces that “wait... how?” reaction.

And now you have to keep watching.

Saying there are three of them promises a FAST payoff, so it never feels like a big time commitment.

Then how much per year pins him to real numbers, which is exactly why you stick around for all three.

And calling them boring quietly flatters you... like you're sharp enough to see past the flashy stuff everyone else chases.

Steal it:

Here are [N] boring [things in your niche] that [big outcome], and exactly how much each one [does].

→ test it today: rank the 3 most underrated plays in your niche with real numbers.

Your website is costing you customers every single day.

Every day without a great website means lost customers. Readdy.ai builds your full site in under 2 minutes—design, copy, SEO, hosting, and booking included. Just describe your business, then update hours, prices, or services by asking AI. No developer, no delays, no excuses.

3) the “identity” hook

What it is: an "I refuse to..." line the viewer instantly adopts as their own stance.

"I refuse to be broke and have crusty skin, so here are three drugstore skincare products under $20 that actually work."

"I refuse to be [X]" is a stance the viewer borrows on the spot.

The second she says it, they're refusing right along with her.

And she stacks two pains into one breath (broke AND crusty skin), so twice as many people see themselves in it.

Then telling you it's all under $20 kills the money objection before it even has a chance to form.

Steal it:

I refuse to be [pain 1] and [pain 2], so here are [N] [affordable things] that actually work.

→ test it today: name the two things your customer refuses to accept + your cheap fix.

4) ★ the "stat-shock” hook

What it is: a real, counterintuitive news stat that violates what everyone assumes, then "why?"

"Microsoft just told 100,000 of its own engineers to stop using AI. Why? Because the AI was costing more than paying the engineers."

It breaks the one thing everyone believes that AI cuts costs.

And it comes from an authority you can't just wave off, because it's Microsoft.

Then he asks why?, which forces you to stay for the answer... and that answer flips the belief on its HEAD.

Steal it:

[big name] just [shocking, counterintuitive move]. Why? Because [the surprising reason].

→ test it today: find one real, surprising development in your space and open on the "why?" (use a real one, never a made-up stat).

5) ★ the “downplay“ hook

What it is: a throwaway "not to be dramatic but..." that promises drama by pretending there is none.

"not to be dramatic but I'm applying my lip combo with the founder…"

Pre-apologizing for being dramatic makes you lean in.

Because if she's downplaying it this hard, it must secretly be BIG.

Then she casually drops the flex... she's applying it with the founder.

And writing it all in lowercase makes it read like a friend telling you something, not a brand selling you.

Steal it:

not to be dramatic but [understated thing that's secretly a flex].

→ test it today: frame your biggest result as a throwaway "not to be dramatic but…"
